
Coordinated Multi-Helicopter Flight from a Single RC Controller
The Challenge
Flying one RC helicopter well takes skill. Flying several at once, in sync, from a single controller is a different problem altogether — every vehicle needs to receive and act on the same commands at the same time, without the pilot juggling multiple transmitters or the aircraft drifting out of formation.
NLP Labs set out to prove this was possible without redesigning the helicopters themselves.
Our Approach
Rather than reverse-engineer or replace the flight electronics already built into each helicopter, we designed an additional layer around them:
- Custom add-on electronics were built to sit alongside the existing onboard systems, without altering their original wiring or firmware.
- A microcontroller was programmed from scratch to receive a single control input and translate it into synchronized commands for every helicopter in the formation.
- A different RC controller — not the stock transmitter that shipped with the helicopters — was used to drive all vehicles simultaneously, confirming that the coordination logic works independently of the manufacturer's original control link.
This approach kept each helicopter's factory systems intact, which made the proof-of-concept faster to build and easier to validate — the risk was isolated to new, purpose-built hardware rather than modified factory components.
Results
The proof-of-concept succeeded: multiple helicopters flew in a coordinated formation under the command of a single RC controller. The full process was recorded on video, from the initial ground test through two live coordinated flights.

Why This Matters
Reliable, low-cost coordination of multiple aerial vehicles has applications well beyond a single demo flight — synchronized agricultural spraying, choreographed aerial displays, multi-angle filming, and formation-based surveying all depend on exactly this kind of capability. This POC shows NLP Labs can design and build that coordination layer from the ground up, on hardware we don't control the internals of.
